Description

This is to show that Earth is round, via its shadow, during the total lunar eclipse on Sep 17, 1997. This is made with multiple exposures on one SINGLE film. To get the right circular shape of the shadow, Mr. Chen-Yu Yan (Taiwan) calculated Moon's orbit and the relative positions of Earth and Sun, during the eclipse. He then projected Earth's shadow on the sky at the distance of Moon's orbit, as viewed from our observing site. With his calculated coordinates of the shadow, I was able to track the motion of the shadow by moving a reference star in the guiding eyepiece. All these were done manually on a mount with no GOTO functions.
